The purpose of this page is to give you a brief overview of what to expect as a Councillor in one of our Academies.

Academy Council

The Foundation Academy Councillors will be those appointed by the Bishop. Parents, including carers, of registered pupils at the school are eligible to stand for election for Parent Governorship at the school. Staff Councillors are elected by the school staff and must be paid employees of the school.


Foundation Academy Councillors:

The Foundation Councillors shall be appointed by the Bishop. They shall outnumber all other Academy Councillors by two so as to ensure the preservation and development of the Catholic character of the academy and the Multi-Academy Trust Company.


Staff Academy Councillors:

Unless the Headteacher resigns from the Academy Council, he/she shall be treated for all purposes as being an ex officio member of the Academy Council.


The Academy Council shall invite nominations from all staff who are employed by the Multi-Academy Trust Company and who work at the academy and, where there are any contested posts, shall hold an election by a secret ballot.


Parent Academy Councillors:

The parent members of the Academy Council shall be appointed after election by parents of registered pupils at the academy and he or she must be a parent or carer of a pupil at the academy at the time when he or she is elected.


Any election of persons who are to be the parent members of the Academy Council which is contested shall be held by secret ballot.


Term of Office:

The term of office for any person serving on the Academy Council shall be 4 years, this does not apply to the Headteacher. Foundation Councillors may only serve a maximum of three consecutive four-year terms (other than with the consent of the Bishop).


The Academy Council has specific responsibilities in a number of areas including:


  • ensure secure, welcoming, and engaging environments in which all individuals learn to value and respect both themselves and others
  • provide all individuals with the opportunities to achieve excellence, to develop their full potential as human beings and to encourage and challenge them to do so
  • uphold the unshakable belief in the unique potential of each child, student, and member of staff
  • provide a curriculum that initiates students into the knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills they need to become mature Christian adults in their personal, social, family and working lives.


The constitution of the Academy Council is:

  • 6 Foundation Councillors
  • 2 Parent Councillors
  • 1 Staff Councillor
  • Headteacher
